Introduction:
A leading organization in the media measurement sector plays a pivotal role in delivering accurate and reliable viewership data that informs advertising investments and media planning decisions across the country. With business-critical applications operating on a modern Kubernetes environment powered by VMware Tanzu (under Broadcom VCF), the organization required a robust, scalable, and enterprise-grade data protection framework to securely safeguard its containerized workloads and ensure operational continuity.
Having previously built a resilient Kubernetes foundation in collaboration with the client, Indus Systems and Services was re-engaged to design and implement a comprehensive backup and recovery strategy. This time, the focus was on deploying an advanced data protection solution using Veeam Kasten, ensuring application-level resilience, faster recovery, and consistent protection for dynamic, containerized environments.
Challenges:
As the organization advanced its application modernization journey with Kubernetes, new data protection complexities began to surface. With business-critical audience measurement workloads running in a dynamic, containerized environment, the need for consistent backups, faster recovery, and governance-aligned protection became increasingly critical. Any data loss, service disruption, or recovery delay could directly impact business continuity, reporting accuracy, and stakeholder confidence, making a robust and future-ready protection strategy essential.
Application-Consistent Protection:
Ensuring reliable, application-aware backups for stateful containerized workloads, with consistency across microservices, persistent volumes, and dynamic Kubernetes environments to prevent data corruption and ensure dependable recovery.
Multi-Cluster Data Security:
Protecting business-critical data across multiple namespaces and Kubernetes clusters through centralized, policy-driven protection mechanisms that maintain data integrity and availability across distributed environments.
Optimized RTO and RPO:
Reducing recovery time and data loss windows by implementing structured backup schedules and efficient restore workflows aligned with strict business continuity and service availability requirements.
Compliance and Governance Alignment:
Meeting governance, audit, and regulatory requirements through standardized data protection policies, secure backup processes, and detailed reporting to support compliance and operational transparency.
Automated Backup and Disaster Recovery:
Implementing automated, policy-based backup frameworks with seamless disaster recovery capabilities, enabling rapid restoration of applications, namespaces, and volumes with minimal manual intervention.
These issues necessitated a comprehensive solution that would address current limitations while future-proofing the IT environment.
Our Solution:
Indus Systems and Services designed and deployed a Kubernetes-native data protection framework using Veeam Kasten, seamlessly integrated into the existing Tanzu-based Kubernetes environment within Broadcom VCF. The solution was engineered to deliver automated, application-aware backups, secure storage integration, and rapid recovery capabilities, while ensuring full operational visibility and compliance alignment. Tailored to the organization’s scale, performance demands, and regulatory requirements, the deployment established a resilient and policy-driven backup ecosystem for its containerized workloads.
Kubernetes-Native Backup Architecture:
Veeam Kasten was deployed within the Tanzu Kubernetes clusters with namespace-level and application-level backup policies, along with orchestrated snapshots for persistent volumes to ensure consistent protection.
Automated Backup Policies:
Scheduled backups were configured in line with defined RPO targets, supported by structured retention management and label-based automation for streamlined policy enforcement.
Secure Storage Integration:
The solution was integrated with enterprise storage targets, enabling encrypted backups and incorporating role-based access control (RBAC) to strengthen data security and governance.
Disaster Recovery Enablement:
Cross-cluster recovery capabilities were established, allowing granular restoration of applications, namespaces, and volumes, supported by automated backup validation workflows.
Operational Visibility and Compliance:
A centralized dashboard was implemented to monitor backup performance, generate compliance-ready reports, and provide proactive alerts for improved operational oversight.
Implementation Highlights:
Indus Systems and Services followed a structured deployment methodology to ensure smooth implementation with minimal risk and faster adoption. The approach focused on seamless integration, operational continuity, and validated recovery readiness while enabling internal teams to confidently manage the environment post-deployment.
Seamless Integration with Tanzu Environment:
The solution was integrated directly into the existing Tanzu Kubernetes environment within Broadcom VCF, ensuring native compatibility with containerized workloads without requiring major architectural changes.
Zero Disruption to Production Workloads:
Deployment was executed in a phased and non-intrusive manner, allowing all live production workloads to continue running without performance impact or service interruption.
Optimized Resource Utilization within Broadcom VCF:
The architecture was designed to efficiently leverage existing VCF resources, ensuring backup operations remained lightweight and did not affect primary workload performance.
Comprehensive Restore Scenario Testing:
Multiple restore scenarios were tested, including application, namespace, and volume-level recovery, to validate defined RTO and RPO objectives under real conditions.
Knowledge Transfer and Operational Handover:
Structured knowledge transfer sessions and documentation enabled internal teams to independently manage, monitor, and operate the backup environment with confidence.
Business Impact:
The deployment of Veeam Kasten significantly strengthened the organization’s data protection posture for its Kubernetes environment. By enabling consistent backups, faster recovery, and automated management, the solution enhanced resilience while aligning with operational and compliance requirements for business-critical workloads.
Enhanced Business Continuity:
Reliable, application-consistent backups ensured continuous protection of critical Kubernetes workloads. This reduced the risk of data loss and maintained operational stability across dynamic containerized applications.
Reduced Downtime Risk:
Granular restore capabilities enabled faster recovery of applications, namespaces, and volumes. This minimized service disruption and ensured quicker restoration in the event of failures or data issues.
Operational Efficiency:
Automated, policy-driven backup management streamlined routine operations and reduced manual intervention. This improved overall efficiency and allowed IT teams to focus on strategic initiatives.
Regulatory Readiness:
Structured backup policies, reporting, and audit-friendly processes strengthened compliance with governance and regulatory requirements, ensuring better transparency and control.
Future-Ready Architecture:
The scalable, Kubernetes-native protection framework aligns with the organization’s container growth strategy, ensuring long-term resilience and adaptability as workloads continue to evolve.
Conclusion:
Through meticulous planning, collaboration, and technical expertise, Indus Systems and Services successfully modernized the customer’s IT landscape, ensuring a seamless transition to a future-ready infrastructure. The project exemplifies how Indus, together with Dell Technologies, delivers robust and reliable enterprise solutions that drive business performance and resilience.
